Commercial Flooring for Schools

Specialist School Flooring Contractors

School flooring takes more punishment than almost any other commercial environment. Hundreds of pupils moving through corridors, classrooms, and communal areas every day, heavy furniture being dragged across floors, spillages, cleaning regimes, and the expectation that it all still looks presentable years down the line. Getting the specification right from the outset matters — the wrong product in the wrong space will wear out quickly, become a safety issue, or simply fail to cope with the demands placed on it.

At RK Flooring, we work with primary schools, secondary schools, academies, colleges, and other educational buildings on flooring projects of all sizes. We understand what school environments demand, we know which products perform well over the long term, and we work around your school calendar to keep disruption to staff and pupils to a minimum.

Flooring Solutions for Educational Environments

Different areas of a school have very different flooring requirements. A reception classroom needs something warm, safe, and easy to clean. A sports hall needs a sprung or resilient floor that protects joints and meets performance standards. A science lab needs something chemical-resistant and hygienic. We specify each area individually rather than applying a one-size-fits-all approach.

Safety Vinyl & Sheet Flooring

The most common choice for school corridors, classrooms, and washrooms. Slip-resistant, easy to clean, hygienic, and available in a wide range of colours and designs. We specify products with the appropriate R-rating for each area and install them to a standard that holds up under daily cleaning regimes and heavy footfall.

Luxury Vinyl Tile (LVT)

A popular choice for reception areas, offices, staff rooms, and breakout spaces where appearance matters alongside performance. Hard-wearing, low maintenance, and available in a range of wood and stone finishes that give a more considered look than standard safety vinyl. Works well in areas with moderate footfall where aesthetics are a priority.

Carpet & Carpet Tiles

Carpet tiles remain a practical and popular choice for classrooms, libraries, and staff areas in schools. They reduce noise, improve acoustics, and individual tiles can be replaced if damaged — keeping long-term maintenance costs down. We specify commercial-grade carpet tiles rated for educational use, with the fibre and pile weight matched to the demands of each room.

Resin & Epoxy Flooring

The right choice for science laboratories, food technology rooms, design and technology spaces, and any area where chemical resistance, hygiene, and durability are non-negotiable. Seamless, easy to clean, and available in a range of finishes. We install resin systems appropriate for educational environments and specify the correct anti-slip finish where required.

Entrance Matting & Barrier Flooring

Properly specified entrance matting reduces the volume of dirt and moisture tracked into the building, protects the main floor surfaces from premature wear, and reduces cleaning costs over time. We supply and install recessed and surface-mounted entrance matting systems suited to the footfall levels and door configurations of school entrances.

Subfloor Preparation

School buildings range from Victorian-era structures with challenging subfloors to modern academy buildings with their own specific requirements. We assess every subfloor before installation — checking moisture levels, identifying damage, and carrying out levelling and priming where needed. In educational buildings, getting this right is especially important given the expectation of long service life.

Working Around the School Calendar

One of the most important practical considerations for any school flooring project is timing. We’re experienced in planning and delivering flooring projects around school term dates — working during holidays, half-terms, and weekends to avoid disrupting teaching time. For larger projects that can’t be completed in a single holiday period, we plan phased delivery so work progresses without affecting occupied areas.

We communicate clearly throughout — with the school business manager, facilities team, or whoever is coordinating the project on your side — and flag anything that might affect the programme as early as possible.

Compliance & Standards

School flooring needs to meet relevant building regulations and health and safety requirements. This includes slip resistance ratings appropriate for each area, fire classification requirements, and in some cases acoustic performance standards. We’re familiar with the standards that apply to educational buildings and specify products accordingly — so you don’t have to manage that complexity yourself.

Our Process

Step 01

Initial Consultation

We talk through the project scope — which areas need flooring, what the performance requirements are, your budget, and your preferred installation window. We can work from your specification or produce our own.

Step 02

Site Survey

We visit the school to take measurements, assess subfloor conditions across each area, identify any preparation work required, and note anything that might affect the installation programme or product specification.

Step 03

Specification & Quote

A detailed specification for each area, covering product, preparation, and installation method, alongside a clear, itemised quote. We’ll flag any compliance requirements and make sure the products specified are appropriate for each environment.

Step 04

Subfloor Preparation

Levelling, crack repair, moisture treatment, and priming across all areas before installation begins. In older school buildings in particular, this stage often determines how well the finished floor performs and how long it lasts.

Step 05

Installation

Carried out during your agreed installation window — holidays, half-terms, or weekends — by experienced fitters who work efficiently, keep the site tidy, and communicate clearly throughout the programme.

Step 06

Sign-Off & Aftercare

We walk the finished floors with you before we close the project out. We’ll also provide guidance on cleaning regimes, maintenance schedules, and what to do if individual areas need attention — so your facilities team has everything they need going forward.

Frequently Asked Questions

Yes — we plan the majority of our school flooring projects around the academic calendar, working during summer holidays, half-terms, Easter, and Christmas breaks. For larger projects that span multiple holiday periods, we plan phased delivery so occupied areas are never affected. We’ll agree the installation window with you at the quoting stage.
Heavy-duty safety vinyl or sheet flooring is the most common and practical choice for school corridors. It needs to carry a high slip resistance rating, be easy to clean, and handle constant heavy footfall without wearing through quickly. We specify products with the appropriate wear layer and R-rating for the level of use, and install them with properly welded seams to prevent moisture ingress and lifting.
Yes. The products we specify for educational environments meet the relevant UK building regulations and British Standards, including requirements for slip resistance, fire classification, and where applicable, acoustic performance. We’ll flag the relevant standards for each area as part of the specification process.
Yes — we regularly manage multi-area school flooring projects, with different products specified for different zones. We coordinate the programme carefully to make sure preparation and installation work flows logically between areas, and we keep you updated throughout.
Yes. We work as a flooring subcontractor on school refurbishment and new-build projects, taking instruction from main contractors and fitting our scope into the wider programme.
