R K Flooring Ltd was contracted to carry out the full replacement of resilient floor coverings across multiple live wards within a secure NHS mental health facility in Essex. This complex, phased project involved the refurbishment of seven active wards, with a total floor area of 5,342m², delivered within strict health, safety, and infection control parameters.
Scope of Works:
- Full uplift and removal of existing floor coverings across corridors, bedrooms, kitchens, shower rooms, and communal areas
- Subfloor preparation, including mechanical surface preparation and application of smoothing compounds suitable for heavy-traffic healthcare environments
- Supply and installation of:
- Forbo Marmoleum to all corridors and communal areas, including custom hand-cut inlays and patterns, tailored to suit the unit’s design scheme and aid with visual zoning
- Polysafe Standard PUR to kitchens and shower rooms, offering high slip resistance in wet and hygiene-critical areas
- Polysafe Wood FX PUR to patient bedrooms, combining a warm, residential aesthetic with commercial-grade performance and cleanability
Project Outcome:
Working within a live mental health unit presented specific logistical and safeguarding challenges. All works were coordinated in close liaison with NHS facilities management to ensure minimal disruption to patients and staff. The completed installation enhanced both the functionality and aesthetic environment of the wards, delivering compliant, low-maintenance, and hard-wearing surfaces throughout.
